Magical math in hiring
When we work with someone, sometimes 1 + 1 = 2, sometimes 1 + 1 = 10, and other times 1 + 1 = -5.
It's magical math. It defies logic, yet it feels so real. We've all learned via experience that not all partnerships are equal. And that's normal.
A leader's job is to put people together where 1 + 1 = 10, and beware when it equals -5. We can look for this magical math in our hiring process for our conductors, instrumentalists, singers, administrators, and marketers.
The reality is that this magical math won't happen by itself in our current system of let's-just-hire-the-best-person-on-paper. It requires foresight, intention, and a deep understanding of how the people in question function.
We must decide to look for the qualities that make the math magical.
For 1 + 1 = 10, here are some aspects to look for:
Complementary qualities - Look for skill sets, personalities, communication styles that work well together (though not necessarily the same). It's not just about hiring those with top-tier skills, but those whose skills mesh perfectly with others. Design a team that can fill each other's gaps, where skills mesh perfectly.
Alignment - Look for shared core values and common missions. People who share the same values care about the same things. When people are driven by a common purpose, their combined energy is amplified exponentially.
Emotional intelligence - Look for those who can understand and respond to the emotions of others. A team with high emotional intelligence can navigate conflict constructively and build strong, supportive relationships.
Growth mindset - A willingness to grow together and adapt to change makes the difference between a stagnant team and one that is explosive.
Diversity of thought - True progress comes from diverse perspectives. Actively seek people who challenge assumptions and bring unique viewpoints to the table.
And it pays to do this. The collaboration will be easier and more enjoyable. The results will be better and faster. And the impact on our finances will be exponential.
What's the math driving your team? How could you make the math more magical?
